Thank you so much for this lesson. It helped me understand better an article i read last week about politeness levels in Korea. You are an amazing teacher! Hope you are feeling betterπ
Have you seen the drama "Hwarang"? In that show the main character keeps forgetting to speak formally so he will say something, then wait a couple of seconds and say "yo". It is hilarious and this lesson reminded me of that. Thanks for the clear explanation, once again.
I have never watched that! But it happens quite often and as I said in the post, you just need to add or drop μ to go back and forth between polite and casual (for the most part). Thanks for your comment!
No you got it right Elyse. You would never change the spelling of your own name so it will always be "μ리μ€μΌ", "μ리μ€μμ" or "μ리μ€μ λλ€".
Just when I thought that everything was crystal clear to me, there was that sentence at the end "λ°₯ λ¨Ήμμ΄μ"/λ°₯ λ¨Ήμμ΄" which means I ate. I expected the subject I /μ at the beginning of the sentence, but there is the word λ°₯ (I found that word means rice), so I was a little confused.
I'm a little late with the lesson and the comment, but I hope to catch up on everything I missed π
λ°₯ was the object of the sentence so it still goes with the S + O + V sentence order. In Korean, we don't just say "I'm eating" or "I ate". You'd always say "I'm eating meal" or "I ate meal" which we use λ°₯ for the word!
μλ νμΈμ μ μλ. μ λ λ§λ₯΄μμ΄μμ.βΊοΈπΈ Teacher, could you please tell me when we use μλ νμλκΉ? For example is it okay to say :μλ νμλκΉ μ μλ. μ λ λ§λ₯΄μμ λλ€? Does it make more formal sense?ππ€

Thank you so much for another great lesson, and Iβm sorry to hear you are feeling unwell!
Iβve taken few beginner level lessons in the past and even then I didnβt quite understand the difference between μ΄μμ & μ λλ€, but you explain things in a way that is much easier for me to comprehend and I truly look forward to your email every Sunday. I will keep on learning...κ°μ¬ν©λλ€ μ μλ!!!ππ» and please, get well soon! π
You're very welcome! But be careful with the spelling, it's either μ΄μμ or μμ!π Keep up the great work!

Would that be the correct way to use the ending or would it use the μ΄μΌ ending like μ리μμΌ?

Yes that's right. Formal Korean has λλ€ ending for statement and λκΉ? ending for questions!

Side note: you don't really want to use the word 'you' in polite, formal Korean. Just don't say it or say the name of the person instead.

For some reason I hadn't realized that μ λλ€ is formal. I should have, since I knew κ°μ¬ν©λλ€ is, but it just hadn't clicked in my brain yet. This is why I'm thankful for these lessons that help me figure out the "why" behind the bits and pieces of Korean I've picked up so far! κ°μ¬ν©λλ€!
That's great! We need to get everything connected then we won't lose it as easily. Let's keep moving forward!
